“A struggle between heart and headache” was Beethoven description of the first movement of this late, dramatic sonata and there is a definite love story behind Schumann’s Fantasie in C, which was inspired by Clara Wieck, his wife to be, as well as his deep admiration for Beethoven. When Clara first saw the piece she wrote “yesterday I received your wonderful fantasy — today I am still half ill with rapture.” Chopin is also in rhapsodic, rather than nationalistic mode in his Polonaise-Fantasie.
